Carers Support


Association of Carers – free volunteer-led support services to unpaid carers in East Sussex. A carer is someone of any age who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help. This could be be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems.

Support available:

The Befriending & Respite service gives unpaid carers the opportunity to take a weekly three-hour break from their caring role, while a carefully selected and thoroughly vetted volunteer spends time with the person they look after.

The Help at Home service gives carers six 1-1 sessions where a trained and fully vetted volunteer teaches them how to use their own computer or tablet in their own home.

The free wellbeing services include Talk & Support a service where a fully vetted and trained volunteer calls a carer they are matched with once a weekly, reducing down to once a month over 6 months. This gives opportunity for the carer to speak in a confidential and non-judgemental environment to help reduce isolation.

East Sussex Young Carers – support the most vulnerable Young Carers aged 5-18 who are responsible for caring for a family member with a long term illness or disability, prioritising Young Carers caring for a parent with a mental health or drug and alcohol issue. ESYC works in partnership with Early Help, Education, Health, and Voluntary Organisations to achieve the best outcomes for Young Carers.

Support available:

Information, advice, guidance, signposting and advocacy through a single point of contact called the Young Carers Hub. This is available to Young Carers, Families and Professionals.

Chill Clubs are dedicated groups in East Sussex for Young Carers to meet each other, talk about their caring role and of course have fun! Chill Clubs are tailored to the nature of the caring role with a focus on hidden Young Carers.

East Sussex Young Carers support team provides face to face support to Young Carers individually and to the whole family. The team will be guided by other professionals or keyworkers with the family and will seek out relevant expertise from other professionals for the benefit of the family. Education is essential to a Young Carers development. Care for the Carers – a wide range of support for carers in East Sussex.

Support available:

The Gateway Service offers information, advice and support on a range of issues, and acts as the first point of contact for all our other services. It is provided 9-5 every weekday.
Gateway staff will listen to you, provide support, advice and information, and talk through the options available, including the services offered by Care for the Carers and those provided by their partners. They can arrange for a support worker to meet with you, book places on their training courses and activities, refer you to their counselling service, and refer you to services provided by their partners.

If you need an interpreter, they can arrange a telephone interpreter for your initial contact, and a face-to-face interpreter for a support and advice appointment.

East Sussex Carers Card: As an unpaid carer you might worry about what would happen to the person you care for if you had an accident or were suddenly taken ill. The East Sussex Carers Card enables you to set up a CRESS (Carers Respite Emergency Support Service) plan as part of your Carer’s Assessment. This includes contact details for up to three people who could provide short-term support in an emergency. You will have the East Sussex Carers Card to carry with you, so that in an emergency, you or someone else can call the number on the card. When this happens, East Sussex County Council will contact the people you have named in your emergency plan.
If none of your contacts are available, or if there are no other people you can identify to act as an emergency contact, Adult Social Care will provide support to look after the person you care for. This card is available to unpaid carers of adults.

Carers Card: If you do not wish to put an emergency plan in place but would still like to benefit from discounts for carers you can apply for a Carers Card directly from Care for the Carers by completing a short registration form online. This card is also available to parent carers of children.
Discounts can be gained at a variety of retail and leisure venues in East Sussex and CFTC are working to add new businesses all the time. A directory listing all the offers is available at their website.
Businesses that take part in the scheme may display a Carers Card sticker in their window.
CFTC also offers pop-up carers clinics, counselling, carers groups, training, access to respite services, online support and one to one support and advice.

Mental Health Carers Group – meets monthly and is a safe space to talk about the issues that carers experience whilst supporting someone with specific health issues. With tea and biscuits a plenty, group meetings are a secure environment for you to meet other carers, build friendships and share common interests and experiences. Meetings in Eastbourne – 2nd Thursday of each month.

Adult Social Care – you can contact them to get support for carers. If you’re looking after someone who couldn’t manage without your help you have a right to have your own needs assessed. This is called a carer’s assessment. You can complete a carer’s assessment online at their website.
The carer’s assessment looks at:
the care you provide and how this affects your life
ways you can access support and what you would like to achieve
ways they can help you to understand your strengths and capabilities
types of support available to you in the community.
Although it’s your right to have a carer’s assessment you don’t need to have one to get help from other organisations that support carers. If you need help completing the form you can ask for it.

Social Care Connect – is a point of contact for adults and carers with health, care and support needs to access information, advice and community services in East Sussex.The service is available if you or the person you care for is over 18. They can provide information and advice, point you to other organisations, take applications to assess your needs, consider whether you would benefit from daily living equipment or telecare, provide support to carers and you can raise any safeguarding concerns you have with them. w: t: 03456080191.
